Toyota Venza V6 2WD
Granted, it's a tall wagon. Ground clearance is 8.1 inches — same
as the Highlander SUV — and the obligatory elevated seating position is
present and accounted for. But the Venza shares its 109.3-inch
wheelbase with the Camry, and it basically drives like one, too. That's
a good thing, folks. The Venza doesn't exactly set our pants afire with
its handling prowess, but it feels as stable as a Camry through corners
while offering a similarly comfortable ride. What's more, the Venza has
a nicer and more functional interior, with an exclusive avant-garde
dashboard design and more than 70 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume.
Toyota Corolla XLE Design/Fit and Finish
The quality of materials is OK, but hardly class-leading as the
Corolla once was — midpack is an apt descriptor. Although general
plastic quality is OK, the tactile feel of the various buttons, knobs
and stalks feels particularly cheap. The XLE's standard faux wood trim
drew mixed reactions that seemed to fall along generational lines:
older testers liked it; younger ones loathed it.
Saturn Outlook XR AWD Comfort
The leather-wrapped steering wheel feels good, with just enough
thickness and cushion to keep road-weary hands comfortable. It also
tilts and telescopes to adjust to drivers of different sizes and
position preferences.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Performance
Surprisingly, given our leadfoot tendencies, we averaged 18.4 mpg
in mixed driving against the EPA's estimates of 15 city/22 highway/17
combined. Drive like you don't have a company gas card and you'll
probably do a few mpg better than we did.
Braking performance is about average for this class, as we recorded
a 120-foot effort during a simulated panic stop from 60 mph. Pedal feel
is firm, though travel is longer than expected.
